page 209 - There were in Talladega County iron works all told - eight forges and one blast furnace - in operation during antebellum days. Of these, the Maria Forge, erected in 1836, was the first, and Eagle Forge (1846) was the second. Then followed in successive order: Cheaha Creek Foundry (1846), Robert Jemison and (Samuel) Hunter; Riddles Mill foundry (1848), Edward Spang and Dr. William Summers; Fain's Creek forge, Silas and David Garrigus, A W Bowie, Major Walker Reynolds, John T Ragan; Clairmont Springs forge (1850) ___ Amerine; Rob Roy Forge (1852), George M Riddle, John Moore, ___ Curry (J A) and ___ Parks; Chinnabee forge (1852), Silas Garrigus; The Knight furnace (1854), J L Orr and William Craig Orr.
page 210 - Prior to coming to Alabama, the Riddle Brothers were employed in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, where they engaged in railroad construction. Associated with them were Silas and David Garrigus, Iron makers, and George D Wheeler, a civil engineer who were persuaded to come to Alabama, and they also became pioneer iron makers of Talladega County.
page 211 - Fains Creek Forge was erected by David Garrigus and Walker Reynolds from material purchased from Maria Forge. It was erected during the Civil War, and was operated for some time after the War. Mr. Reynolds sold his interest to John T Ragan, who had worked with Riddle Bros. for some years. Silas Garrigus and A W Bowie were connected with this forge at some time.
page 212 -Chinabee Forge was erected by Silas Garrigus on Horse Shoe Creek at Seay's in 1852. It was operated successfully for fifteen to twenty years.
