[266] Margaret Ann Garrigus born 10-Apr-1837, Rockaway, Morris, NJ, married 20-Jan-1865, in Pontotoc, Thomas Joshua Hadley, born 11-Mar-1838, Pontotoc, died 24-Dec-1910, Chickasaw Co, buried: IOOF Cem, Okolona. Margaret died 20-Jun-1919, Troy, buried: 21-Jun-1919, Pleasant Grove Cem, Shannon.
Her father was David Garrigus born 17-Apr-1812, Rockaway, Morris, NJ, married (1) 30-Dec-1835, Ann Sprancusas (Margaret's mother), married (2) 8-May-1853, Martha Jane Wood, married (3) 25-Dec-1869, Larcenie Tyler, born ca 1850. David died 30-Jun-1873, Rockaway, Morris, NJ. From "Historic Tales of Talladega" by E Grace Jemison, there were in Talladega County nine iron works all told, eight forges and one blast furnace. The Riddle Brothers were employed in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, where they engaged in railroad construction. Associated with them were Silas and David Garrigus, Iron makers, and George D Wheeler, a civil engineer who were persuaded to come to Alabama, and became pioneer iron makers of Talladega County. Silas and David Garrigus was associated with most of the forges at different times. David's father was Silas Garrigus born 18-Aug-1785, Morris, NJ, married Hannah Lindly. Silas died 3-Mar-1859, Morris, NJ. Silas' father was David Garrigus born 12-Mar-1748, Morris, NJ, married Abigail Losey. David died 2-Oct-1815, Hamilton, Butler, OH.
David's father was Jacob Garrigus born 1716, Philadelphia, PA, married -abt-1738, Sarah, born 1720, died 17-Jul-1777. Jacob's father was Matthiew Garrigues born 1679, Languedoc Prov, France, married 28-May-1702, Suzanna Rochet, died 30-Sep-1746, buried: Christ Church, Philadelphia, PA. Matthiew died 6-Sep-1726, Philadelphia, PA, buried: Christ Church, Philadelphia, PA. He probably was buried and his wife buried in same plot years later. The Garrigue family originated in France. They were Hugenots and because of that was persecuted after the Edict of Nances. They fled to the Netherlands and other countries of haven. From there, many migrated to the United States. Margaret Ann Garrigus Hadley was my great grandmother. Her sons and grandsons were involved in moonshining and were often in trouble with the law. In reading some correspondence between Margaret and her family in New Jersey, it appears they were pretty well to do; frequent trips to New York, wintering in Florida, etc. That was quite a contrast between Margaret's people and her own lifestyle. In the early 1900s, Margaret's sister, Amanda, and grandson, Frank Pardee, traveled by train to Tupelo to visit Margaret. They did not recognize each other after thirty years. David and Silas returned to New Jersey. While living in Talladega, various children and grandchildren visited. Margaret had a sister named Mary Ann who married a neighbor boy in Talladega. In 1860, Mary Ann, her husband, two boys and Margaret are found living in Pontotoc Co. with the Hadley family living near by. In 1870, Mary Ann and her family are gone and Margaret is married to Thomas Joshua Hadley. The rest is history.
