This information provided by Mary Dixon, descendant of Joseph Starnes, son of Jacob and Jane Hadley (Russell) Starnes. Jacob is son of Nicholas Starnes of North Carolina. This article is from a newspaper in Webster County Mississippi.
Those whose roots date back in the nineteenth century to Webster County are descendants of Jacob Starnes, 1795-1878, and Jane Headly Starnes and their two children who came to this county in the early 1800s. They settled in what is now known as Starnes Tabernacle around 1829. This settlement was recognized in Damon Veach's column in New Orleans Times Picayune and Fort Worth Star Telegram. The settlement was located on the headwaters of Spring Creek. Others have written of Jacob's good relationship with the Indians. The Choctaws and Chickasaws once met for a council meeting in his home. From records available, it would seem that Jacob and Jane had three sons, Joseph, Magar, and Philip. It also appears that Philip was born after the family came to Mississippi. The three boys grew up and lived in what is now Webster County. Philip was killed at an early age while hauling corn. He left an infant son, Cicero (spelled Cesaroe in 1880 census). Cicero has one daughter, Mary, who lives in the Sapa community and she has one son, Cicero Mason. It appears that Magar Starnes was married three times. The 1880 census lists, Georgia, Della, Russell, Jacob, Columbia, Viola, and Cassie. Eventually, most of his children left Webster County to Arkansas, Texas, and California. Those who remained in Mississippi settled in Lafayette, Choctaw, Clay and Oktibbeha Counties.
