Pontotoc - L J Buddy Payne, 78, died Thursday, March 9, 2000, at Pontotoc Health Services, after a sudden illness. He was born Jan. 13, 1922, in Lee County. He was the retired owner of the Payne Construction Company and retired from South Pontotoc School, where he was a bus driver for many years. He was a U S Air Force Veteran and a colonel on the staff of Gov. Bill Waller. He was a member of Troy First Baptist Church. Services will be at 2 pm today at Troy First Baptist Church with Bro. Greg Herndon officiating. Burial will be in Eddington Cemetery. Baldwin Funeral Home of Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include four daughters, Kathy Parker and her husband, Tommy, of Caledonia, Melissa Scott and her husband, Jeff of Belden, and Pat Kilpatrick ahd her husband, Sam, and Dee Webb and her husband, Sam, and Dee Webb and her husband, Tim, all of Tupelo; one son Van Hodges of Pontotoc; one sister, Jeri Payne of Highland, Ill.; one brother, Ray Payne of Okinawa, Japan; his grandchildren, Arianae Copeland, Sam Kilpatrick, Kristy Jourdan and Susie Kilpatrick; his great-grandchildren, Joshua and Rial Copeland, Payne and Bailey Scott, Kaylen Webb and Ashley and Carley Hodges.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathelene Johnson payne; a son Phillip Payne; a daughter, Barbara Hodges; two brothers and two sisters.
Pallbearers will be Tim Webb, Mike Duckworth, Sam Kilpatrick III, Sam Kilpatrick IV, Curtis Copeland, and Mike Mask.
